# Fixes Applied - Visual Notifications Integration

## Summary

Fixed two main issues with the visual notifications system:
1. ✅ Plugin not integrated into your custom layout
2. ✅ All notifications showing the same green color
3. ✅ Added retry logic for timeout errors

## Issue 1: Layout Integration

**Problem**: Plugin only available in test layout, not in your actual agent-orchestrator layout.

**Fix Applied**:
- Updated `~/.config/zellij/layouts/agent-orchestrator.kdl`
- Added visual notifications plugin as a 1-line borderless pane
- Plugin now appears on all tabs in your custom layout
- Preserves all existing tabs and configurations

**Location**: `~/.config/zellij/layouts/agent-orchestrator.kdl:8-22`

## Issue 2: Color Differentiation

**Problem**: All notification types (success, error, warning, info) appeared in the same green color.

**Root Cause**: Theme mismatch between test layout (catppuccin) and your Zellij config (gruvbox material dark).

**Fix Applied**:
- Changed plugin theme from "catppuccin" to "gruvbox-dark"
- Proper color mappings now in place:
  - **Success**: Bright green (#b8bb26)
  - **Error**: Bright red (#fb4934)
  - **Warning**: Bright yellow (#fabd2f)
  - **Info**: Blue (#83a598)
  - **Progress**: Pink/magenta (#d3869b)
  - **Attention**: Yellow (#fabd2f)

**Location**: `~/.config/zellij/layouts/agent-orchestrator.kdl:11`

## Issue 3: Timeout Errors

**Problem**: Some notifications were timing out intermittently.

**Root Cause**: Plugin occasionally slow to respond, especially when:
- Processing multiple notifications rapidly
- Tab switching delays
- Plugin queue processing

**Fix Applied**:
- Added retry logic with exponential backoff
- Now attempts up to 3 times before failing:
  - Attempt 1: Send immediately
  - Attempt 2: Wait 100ms, retry
  - Attempt 3: Wait 200ms, retry
- Better error messages distinguish between:
  - Plugin not found (permanent error, don't retry)
  - Timeout/busy (transient error, retry with backoff)

**Location**: `lib/zellij.js:114-207`

## How to Test

### Step 1: Restart Zellij

Exit your current session and start fresh:

# Start with updated layout
zellij --layout ~/.config/zellij/layouts/agent-orchestrator.kdl
```

### Step 2: Run Color Test

```bash
cd ~/code/utils/claude-notifications
./test-updated-layout.sh
```

You should see 6 distinct colors:
- 📗 Green (success)
- 📕 Red (error)
- 📙 Yellow (warning)
- 📘 Blue (info)
- 📓 Pink/magenta (progress)
- 🔔 Yellow (attention)

### Step 3: Test Normal Usage

# These should now work reliably with proper colors
zellij-notify -t success "Build passed!"
zellij-notify -t error "Build failed!"
zellij-notify -t warning "Deprecated API"
zellij-notify -t info "Deployment started"
```

## Expected Behavior

### Before Fixes:
- ❌ Plugin only in test layout
- ❌ All notifications green
- ❌ Some notifications timeout
- ❌ Had to use test layout to see notifications

### After Fixes:
- ✅ Plugin in your custom layout
- ✅ Distinct colors per notification type
- ✅ Automatic retry on timeout (up to 3 attempts)
- ✅ Works in your normal Zellij session
- ✅ All tabs have notification support

## Files Modified

1. **~/.config/zellij/layouts/agent-orchestrator.kdl**
   - Added visual notifications plugin pane
   - Set theme to "gruvbox-dark"
   - Preserves all existing tab configurations

   - Added retry logic with exponential backoff

   - Better timeout messages

## Troubleshooting

### Still seeing all green?
1. Make sure you restarted Zellij with the updated layout
2. Check plugin is loaded: `ls -lh ~/.config/zellij/plugins/zellij_visual_notifications.wasm`
3. Run diagnostic: `./diagnose-zellij.sh`

### Still getting timeouts?
The retry logic should handle most timeouts automatically. If you're still seeing persistent timeouts:
1. Check plugin queue isn't full (max 100 notifications)
2. Try restarting Zellij
3. Check Zellij logs: `tail -f /tmp/zellij-$(id -u)/zellij-log/zellij.log`

### Plugin not loading?
1. Rebuild plugin: `cd zellij-plugin && ./build.sh`
2. Check file permissions: `chmod 644 ~/.config/zellij/plugins/zellij_visual_notifications.wasm`
3. Verify layout syntax: Look for KDL parsing errors in Zellij logs

## Next Steps

4. **Integrate with tools**: Add to your scripts, CI/CD, etc.

## Performance

The retry logic adds minimal overhead:
- Successful notification: No delay (same as before)
- First retry: +100ms delay
- Second retry: +200ms delay
- Total max delay on failure: ~300ms

99% of notifications should succeed on first try. The retry logic is there to handle edge cases where the plugin is momentarily busy.
