# BUG #21: Confidence Collection IFS Separator Error

**Discovered During:** P1/P2 validation test

## Executive Summary

**Problem:** Orchestrator calculated Loop 3 average confidence as 0.0 despite agent reporting confidence 1.0, causing infinite gate failure loop.

**Root Cause:** IFS separator typo `IFS=',"'` instead of `IFS=','` broke array splitting in confidence collection.

**Impact:** CFN Loop stuck in infinite iteration loop, never progressing to Loop 2 validation.

**Fix:** Corrected IFS separator from `IFS=',"'` to `IFS=','` on line 969.

## Problem Description

### Observed Behavior

**Pattern:** Orchestrator spawned Loop 3 agents repeatedly without ever progressing to Loop 2.

## Root Cause Analysis

### Code Location

**File:** `.claude/skills/redis-coordination/orchestrate-cfn-loop.sh:969`

### Buggy Code

```bash
# BEFORE (buggy):
IFS=',"' read -ra AGENT_ARRAY <<< "$LOOP3_COMPLETED_IDS"
```

**Problem:** Extra `"` character in IFS breaks comma-separated string splitting.

**Example:**
```bash
LOOP3_COMPLETED_IDS="coder-1-1"
IFS=',"' read -ra AGENT_ARRAY <<< "$LOOP3_COMPLETED_IDS"
# Result: AGENT_ARRAY contains entire string as single element with quotes
# AGENT_ARRAY[0] = '"coder-1-1"' (includes quotes!)

# Redis key lookup becomes:
redis-cli get 'swarm:cfn-phase-123:"coder-1-1":confidence'
# ❌ Returns (nil) - key doesn't exist (wrong name due to quotes)
```

### Correct Code

**Result:**

## How It Manifested

## Discovery Process

1. **P1/P2 test launched** - simple file creation task
2. **P1 validated** - coordinator monitoring worked correctly
3. **P2 validated** - SQLite logging showed events
4. **New bug discovered** - Loop 2 never spawned
5. **Analyzed SQLite logs** - agent completed with confidence 1.0
6. **Checked orchestrator output** - showed average 0.0
7. **Inspected confidence collection code** - found `IFS=',"'` typo
8. **Applied fix** - changed to `IFS=','`

## When Bug Was Introduced

**Context:** During waiting mode removal (Option C complete removal)

**Change That Introduced Bug:**

When replacing:

```

With:

# NEW (introduced typo):
IFS=',"' read -ra AGENT_ARRAY <<< "$LOOP3_COMPLETED_IDS"  # ← Typo here
```

**Why Typo Occurred:**
- Manual code replacement during bulk edit
- IFS should match comma separator in CSV string
- Extra `"` likely copy-paste error or IDE autocomplete

1. **Loop 3:**
   - Coder spawns and completes (confidence ≥0.75)
   - Confidence collected correctly from Redis
   - Gate PASSES (not infinite loop)

2. **Loop 2:**
   - Reviewer spawns for validation
   - Consensus calculated correctly
   - Product Owner consulted

3. **Completion:**
   - Task completes successfully
   - File created
   - No infinite iteration loop

Search for other `IFS` usage in orchestrator:

## Impact Assessment

**Severity:** Critical (P0)
- CFN Loop completely broken
- Infinite iteration loop
- Loop 2 never reached
- Product Owner never consulted

**Affected Versions:**
- All builds after waiting mode removal (2025-10-21 17:00 UTC)
- All builds before confidence collection fix (2025-10-21 18:10 UTC)

**User Impact:**
- Any CFN Loop execution would hang
- No successful task completions possible
- Manual kill required to stop orchestrator

## Lessons Learned

1. **Test After Bulk Changes:** The waiting mode removal affected 9 locations in orchestrator - should have tested immediately.

2. **IFS Is Tricky:** Shell string splitting with IFS is error-prone. Consider using `jq` for JSON parsing instead:
   ```bash
   # Alternative approach (more robust):
   LOOP3_COMPLETED_ARRAY=$(echo "$LOOP3_COMPLETED_IDS" | jq -R 'split(",")')
   ```

3. **Validation Before Merging:** Should have run simple CFN Loop test before declaring "fix complete".

4. **SQLite Logging Was Crucial:** Without P2 logging, this bug would have been much harder to diagnose.
