# useField

_Hook to mount a field to the form._

```tsx
import { useField } from 'fielder';
```

## Example usage

```tsx
const [passwordProps, passwordMeta] = useField({
  name: 'password',
  validate: passwordValidation,
});

return <input type={'password'} {...passwordProps} />;
```

## Return type

An array containing props for the target component [(UseFieldProps)](#usefieldprops) and metadata [(UseFieldMeta)](#usefieldmeta).

Type: `[UseFieldProps, UseFieldMeta]`

## Arguments

_useField_ takes a single object with the following properties:

### name **(required)**

The name/key of the field to be added to the form state.

Type: `string`

Example: `'password'`

### initialValue **(required)**

The starting value of the field on first mount.

Type: `string | number | boolean | string[]`

Example: `'small'`

### validate

A validation function which throws an error when validation has failed.

Type: `(arg: { value: T, form: F, trigger: ValidationTrigger }) => (void | Promise<void>)`

Default: `undefined`

Example:

```js
(v, f) => {
  if (v < f.otherField.value) {
    throw Error("Value must be more than 'from' value")
  }
}`
```

### destroyOnUnmount

Whether the field should be completely removed from the form state on unmount.

Type: `boolean`

Default: `false`

### UseFieldProps

Props which can be passed to a form element / component.

```ts
type UseFieldProps<T = any> = {
  readonly name: string;
  readonly value: T;
  readonly onChange: ChangeEventHandler | (value: T) => void;
  readonly onBlur: () => void;
};
```

### UseFieldMeta

Additional information about a field and it's validation state.

```ts
type UseFieldMeta = {
  /** Validation error. */
  readonly error?: Error | string;
  /** Valid state. */
  readonly isValid: boolean;
  /** Async validation is in progress. */
  readonly isValidating: boolean;
  /** onBlur has been called since mount/remount. */
  readonly hasBlurred: boolean;
  /** onChange has been called since mount/remount. */
  readonly hasChanged: boolean;
};
```

### ValidationTrigger

An event type which has triggered validation.

```ts
type ValidationTrigger =
  /* Field has been mounted */
  | 'mount'
  /* `onBlur` event called on field */
  | 'blur'
  /* `onChange` event called on field */
  | 'change'
  /* The value of another field in the form has changed */
  | 'update'
  /* Submission has begun */

```
