# Testing Gaps Assessment

## Overview

This document identifies test coverage gaps in areas to be refactored. **MANDATORY**: All critical gaps must be addressed BEFORE baseline metrics capture. This ensures behavior preservation can be validated.

## Critical Coverage Gaps

### 1. Service Registration (HIGHEST PRIORITY)

**File**: `src/platformAccessory.ts`  
**Status**: ❌ NO COVERAGE  
**Severity**: CRITICAL

#### What's Missing
- No tests verify Air Purifier service is registered
- No tests verify Air Quality Sensor service is registered
- No tests verify all characteristics are registered with correct types

#### Acceptance Criteria
- ✅ Service registration tests pass
- ✅ All characteristics verified to exist
- ✅ All characteristic types correct

### 2. Characteristic Handlers (HIGH PRIORITY)

**File**: `src/platformAccessory.ts`  
**Status**: ⚠️ PARTIAL COVERAGE (~40%)  
**Severity**: HIGH

#### What's Missing
- No tests for onSet handler execution
- No tests for onGet handler execution
- Handler value transformation not tested

**Acceptance Criteria**:
- ✅ All onSet handlers tested
- ✅ All onGet handlers tested
- ✅ Value transformations tested

### 3. Device State Synchronization (HIGH PRIORITY)

**File**: `src/platformAccessory.ts`  
**Status**: ⚠️ PARTIAL COVERAGE (~50%)  
**Severity**: HIGH

#### What's Missing
- No integration tests for device state → HomeKit characteristic updates
- No tests for bidirectional state consistency

**Acceptance Criteria**:
- ✅ Device → HomeKit sync tested
- ✅ Value mappings validated

### 4. Network Protocol & Retry Logic (HIGH PRIORITY)

**File**: `src/rabbitAirClient.ts`  
**Status**: ⚠️ PARTIAL COVERAGE (~30%)  
**Severity**: HIGH

#### What's Missing
- No tests for timeout behavior (3 second timeout)
- No tests for retry logic on failure
- No tests for max retries enforcement

**Acceptance Criteria**:
- ✅ Timeout behavior tested
- ✅ Retry logic tested
- ✅ Max retries enforcement tested

### 5. Platform Lifecycle (MEDIUM PRIORITY)

**File**: `src/platform.ts`  
**Status**: ⚠️ PARTIAL COVERAGE (~20%)  
**Severity**: HIGH

- No tests for full platform initialization
- No tests for accessory registration flow
- No tests for cached accessory restoration

**Acceptance Criteria**:
- ✅ Platform initialization tested
- ✅ Device discovery tested
- ✅ Cached accessory restoration tested

### 6. Network Resilience (CRITICAL - NEW)

#### What's Missing
- No tests for latency handling
- No tests for packet loss scenarios
- No tests for connection disconnect/reconnect

**Acceptance Criteria**:
- ✅ Latency scenarios tested
- ✅ Packet loss scenarios tested
- ✅ Disconnection/reconnection tested

### 7. End-to-End Workflows (CRITICAL - NEW)

## Implementation Timeline

### Phase 0: Critical Gaps (BEFORE baseline capture)
**Timeline**: 4-6 hours

1. Service registration tests (4-5 tests)
2. Characteristic handler tests (10-12 tests)
3. Platform lifecycle tests (5-6 tests)
4. Network resilience smoke tests (4-5 tests)
5. E2E workflow skeleton (1-2 tests)

**Definition of Done**:
- All tests passing
- Coverage improved to ~60%
- Ready for baseline metrics

### Phase 1-3: Comprehensive Coverage (AFTER baseline, during refactor)
**Timeline**: 8-10 hours

Scope: Fill remaining gaps with hap-test

**Definition of Done**:
- All tests passing
- Coverage >80% for src/
- Network resilience comprehensive

## Success Criteria for Gap Filling

- ✅ All CRITICAL gaps addressed before baseline capture
- ✅ All tests passing (no failures)
- ✅ Code coverage improved to at least 60% before baseline
- ✅ Network resilience testing infrastructure in place
- ✅ E2E testing foundation established
