# glean — add what was found later, with its source

Target: **$ARGUMENTS**

Evidence often turns up after a record was made: "Kimura said the team agreed", "the ops notes say to back up first", "that decision
was about disk, not speed". **glean attaches it to the records it concerns, citing where it came from.** A claim with no source is kept only
as unsourced: it is never used as fact and never shown automatically, because nobody can check it later, the owner included.

## Failures this skill prevents

| Failure | What happens later |
|---|---|
| Saving what the owner half remembers as fact | A record nobody can verify steers later work, and the owner cannot say where it came from |
| "Someone said" stored as that person's decision | Hearsay reads as a team agreement |
| Rewriting a record to correct it | Why it changed is lost; the old version comes back |
| Quoting a file from memory | The record cites words the file never had |

## Ask for the source first

Before writing anything, find out where the claim comes from. **Ask the owner, and keep asking until there is a source or the owner says
there is none.** In Claude Code use AskUserQuestion; in Codex, ask in the conversation and wait. Examples:

- "Which issue or pull request was it? Please give the URL"
- "Are there meeting notes or a chat thread? Please give the URL"
- "Which file and which lines say it?"
- "Who said it, and where? Is there a comment or a commit I can cite?"

An answer without a source is not the end: ask for another place it could be (a PR comment, a commit message, a design doc). Only when the
owner says there is no source, save it unsourced and say so.

## Flow

Everything goes through Sphica's `record` MCP server (`glean_begin`, `glean_fetch`, `record_context`, `record_check`, `record_save`,
`record_more`) and the
read tools `search` and `read`. Pass the repository root as `cwd` to every tool.

1. **Find the records** the target concerns with `search`, and `read` each. Note each record's key and `revision` (read prints it)
2. **Ask for the source** (above). Have the owner state it in this session: the owner's words are captured and become citable
3. **Begin**: `glean_begin` with this session (`${CLAUDE_SESSION_ID}` in Claude Code; in Codex, `CODEX_THREAD_ID` from your shell). It returns a `run`
4. **Bring in the source**: for a GitHub issue or pull request URL of this repository, `glean_fetch` with the run and URL; it keeps the text as sources,
   says how many, and lists their refs with who wrote each (read a source with `read s<id>`; when its reply ends with `call record_more with cursor: "..."`, the rest of the list is read with
   `record_more`; everything is already kept, so never fetch again for it). For a file, cite it in the record (`file`); Sphica reads it from git itself. For anything else (meeting notes, chat), cite
   the owner's message that quotes it
5. **Read**: `record_context` with the run: the owner's messages in this session with their refs. When a page's last line says
   `call record_context with after: "..."`, call it again with that `after`, exactly as written, until a page names none
6. **Check**: `record_check` with the run and the record below. It runs the save in a transaction that rolls back, so it refuses what the
   save would refuse and lists what would change (`would be active`, `would: <change>`) without writing it, the verdict and the counts first
   (a reply that ends with `call record_more with cursor: "..."` goes on with `record_more`). Fix errors and check again. A
   note to ask the owner for a source means step 2 is not done
7. **Save**: `record_save`. A reply that starts with `✗` saved nothing: fix the record, check it, and save with the same run.
   **Report** what changed, copying save's lines (all of them: read on with `record_more` when the reply names a cursor)

## The record

```json
{
  "ops": [
    { "op": "add_evidence", "unit": "trace:abc/storage", "revision": 4, "source": "s31", "quote": "Exported CSV files must never include notes.", "role": "states" },
    { "op": "add_evidence", "unit": "trace:abc/storage", "revision": 4, "file": { "path": "docs/ops.md", "commit": "HEAD", "lines": [3, 3] }, "quote": "Back up before a release.", "role": "explains" },
    { "op": "adopt", "unit": "glean:csv/no-notes", "revision": 2, "source": "s40", "quote": "Let's make that final." },
    { "op": "replace_aliases", "unit": "glean:csv/no-notes", "revision": 2, "aliases": ["CSV export", "export notes", "notes field"] }
  ],
  "units": []
}
```

| Op | What it does |
|---|---|
| `add_evidence` | Cites a `source` ref or a committed `file` (path, commit, lines). `role` as in trace. When the owner reports what someone else said, add `reported_speaker`: it stays the owner's report, never that person's statement or an adoption. A file excerpt is stored with keys masked, so quote words around a key, never the key, and cite whole lines around it: a range that cuts through a private key, or leaves a key's name outside, is refused |
| `adopt` | The owner's (or a maintainer's) words that settle a decision or constraint. "Kimura said it was agreed" is not adoption; the owner saying "let's make it final" is |
| `anchor` / `replace_anchor` | Adds a code location, or replaces one whose code moved (`from` and `to`, citing the owner's words); the old one is kept as history with those words. A replacement carries no commit, so an implementation whose proof was the replaced anchor goes back to candidate: add an `anchor` op with `commit` in the same batch to keep it active. A `symbol` that is a key or a value Sphica masks is refused: anchor a name, or the path alone. A warning that the path is not in the working tree (with near paths), is a directory, or does not hold the symbol means fix it and check again |
| `retire_anchor` | Retires a code location with nothing in its place (`from`, citing the owner's words). Reads and edits are matched by path, so the record stops being shown on that file only once it has no live `applies_to` anchor on the path; retire each one, whatever its symbol. `from` names one live anchor by `path`, and `symbol` or `role` when the path holds more than one; check lists them when it cannot tell. The anchor is kept as history with the owner's words, and read shows it under retired anchors. Retiring an implementation's only code proof puts it back to candidate. In one batch, retirements run first, then replacements, then new anchors |
| `replace_aliases` | Replaces the record's search words (`aliases`, up to 12, each 1 to 40 characters) when search needs a word it lacks (the other language, a common term) or an alias is so broad it floods results. Search only, never evidence, so no quote; read prints the current ones, and `[]` clears them |
| `retract_evidence` / `retract_adoption` | Marks a link mistaken, citing the owner's words (`reason_source`, `reason_quote`). When the record cites the same source more than once, add `quote` to say which one. It is kept as history, and the record is judged again |
| `resolve_conflict` | Ends an unresolved conflict between `unit` and `with`, citing the owner's words (`reason_source`, `reason_quote`). Until then each is held back from being shown on its own, except the owner's decision, which only another record the owner adopted holds back |
| `withdraw` | Withdraws a record the owner says no longer holds, citing the owner's words. A superseded record is refused: withdraw the record that replaced it |

Words that give an op its authority have to be their writer's own: the `quote` of `adopt`, `replace_anchor`, and `retire_anchor`, and the
`reason_quote` of `retract_evidence`, `retract_adoption`, `resolve_conflict`, and `withdraw`. Check refuses a quote that touches a `>` line
or a fenced code block, or that sits wholly inside quotation marks on its line or right between two of them (straight or curly quotes,
Japanese corner brackets, backticks, apostrophes): quote more of the owner's own words around it instead. Evidence (`add_evidence`) and the `quote` that says which piece to retract may still be quoted text.
Check reads where the words sit, not what they mean: whether they settle this record is yours to judge.

Every op carries the `revision` read printed; a record changed since is refused, so read it again. To correct what a record says, write a new
record in `units` (trace's shape without the keys `"work"`, `"answers"`, `"field_defs"`, and `"fields"`, and without evidence of the role `decides`, all of which only a trace takes; keys saved as `glean:<key>`) with `supersedes` naming the old one (citing the owner's words, a maintainer's, or the owner's session, not other people's text: words that are in the source, and not only a
quotation there); records are never rewritten.

## When a source turns up for an unsourced record

An unsourced record stays unsourced: adding evidence or adoption to it never makes it active (check says so). While it is a candidate,
replace it with a successor in `units` that cites the source and names it in `supersedes`:

- A GitHub issue or pull request: `glean_fetch` it, and cite the ref it lists in the successor's `evidence`
- A file: `add_evidence` with `file` on the old record first, then `read` the old record to find the excerpt's source ref, and cite that ref
  in the successor
- The quote that grounds `supersedes` goes in the successor's `evidence` or `adoption`. Only a decision or a constraint needs `adoption`
  (the owner's or a maintainer's words) to become active; a finding or an implementation needs its evidence only
